Rimworld Alpha 14 and Steam Release

Some people just want to watch the world burn, now you can!

Some of you may remember Rimworld from my posts on Davechaos.co.uk, well, there have been a great many updates since then, the most recent being Alpha 14 and the long awaited Steam early access release. The devs at Ludeon have been very busy over the past few years and this is evident in the polished feel of many updates to date, a minimal number of bugs, continued modding support and bucket loads of new features.

Let me go back a little and explain the premise of Rimworld. A colony management game with inspiration taken from Firefly, Dwarf Fortress, Dune and Warhammer 40k. The whole thing is run by an AI Storyteller that will help you build up and then kick you when you’re down, not unlike your best friends, in the nicest possible way. Did your colonists survive that heat wave without power? Ok, take an infestation and a raid or two by those unfriendly neighbours, only this time they brought mortars. You get the idea.

It's cold outside...

I spoke of new features, well, since last time I wrote about it we’ve had the addition of animal taming and breeding, colonist relationships, making booze, world generation, biomes, seasonal weather, a custom scenario system and much more. The devs also take inspiration from the modding community, in fact, the scenario system and recent UI tweaks are some of those changes.

The whole game is designed to help you tell a story, from an epic tale of success to the most sorrowful tragedy, depending on how you build, manage events and a nice big chunk of luck, all of these things affect your chances of surviving and getting off this rock. Ludeon have not even scratched the surface of all the planned content so you can expect many more hours of play to come! I absolutely love this game and I hope you do too!

I’ve been writing for Dave for a few years now and I love it, there is always something new to research and test! I hope you enjoy my work!

Before writing I worked in IT for around 11 years and have been an avid gamer for much, much longer. I tend to enjoy everything except sports games, but I’m not above testing them if they’ve tried something new. Give me a Space 4x any day of the week!
